Global Day of Parents
Dear all,
today on the 1st of June we celebrate Global Day of Parents, as an important reminder of the value and importance of parents in our lives.
Becoming a parent is one of the most demanding, most significant, but also the most beautiful life transitions in an adult’s life. However, the parental role is often taken lightly. It is a life role in which parents take responsibility for one small being, who should be further guided, supported, nurtured and ensured that its life needs are met, which is not an easy undertaking with many challenges.
The relationship that children establish with their parents can greatly affect their later relationships in life. Parental warmth and acceptance play a significant role in a child’s mental health. Also, parental acceptance has been shown to be associated with fewer behavioural problems, a better self-image, better school performance, and less insecurity and anxiety in children. Such a positive parent-child relationship directly affects the quality of the child’s relationship with its peers and the usage of prosocial behaviours.
However, parents face several challenges on a daily basis that are complex for both them and their children. For a child to grow into an independent and responsible person, it is necessary to provide him with warmth, but also supervision over behaviour. Rules of conduct, guidelines for adequate behaviour and routines provide children with security for development and provide them with the opportunity to learn that their behavior has affects the world around them and has consequences. As important as it is for a child to feel loved and accepted, he or she must also understand the rules of conduct and believe that parents will ask that they are respected.
It is important to keep in mind that we can all make mistakes – even our parents. There is no need to be a perfect parent, but the one who is good enough. Being a competent parent means trying to recognize and acknowledge when they have made a mistake and striving to develop their parenting skills. Apart from working with children, Center Luka Ritz also works with parents, where we strive to encourage parents to active, positive and responsible parenting in the best interests of the child, help them strengthen their parenting skills and provide them with the necessary help and support in challenging situations.
Significant historical events, the development of society and changes in values, contribute to the development and changes in the family, which leads to changes in the understanding of parenting and the tasks set before parents. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to heightened demands for most parents. With a constant feeling of uncertainty, parents became school teachers, kindergarten teachers, main animators, while some parents also had to do their work from home.
Therefore, Global Day of Parents is a great opportunity to thank our parents for everything they have done and are doing for us, whether we are BIG or SMALL!
Happy Global Day of Parents!
